Responsible dog ownership, leash laws, and canidates.

We have many thousands of dog owners in Broomfield.  All dog owners are responsible for their dogs and what they do, whether they are on or off the leash.  With consistent reinforcement, dogs will become very obedient to simple voice commands like heel, sit, stay, no, okay, etc.  All dog owners should be sure that their dog is "under their control" when they take it out where other people and animals are present.  If your dog is not obedient it should not be out in public.  However, to require all dogs and owners to be connected by a leash is not very reasonable as it does not allow owners to even throw a ball in the park for the dogs to retrieve.  And we have many many dozens of grassy areas throughout the city which are ideal for dog owners to take their dogs out for a run, throw a ball, and even trails on which we can jog and ride bikes with our dogs.  We, tax payers and citizens need to be kind and fair to our dogs in taking them out.  Almost all dog owners know how unreasonable it is to expect that our dogs will always be on leashes if we know that our dogs are obedient and not a threat to others.  Almost every dog owner I have spoken with has his or her dogs off the leash and out some of the time(Just like responsible drivers who may in fact exceed the speed limit sometimes, which include most of the citizens and elected officials with whom I have spoken), including city employees, law enforcement, and elected officials.

We simply need the policy of the police department, to be that owners of animals that are are not causing problems and are under control, need not fear the chance of receiving a citation.  Otherwise, we need the wording of the law changed to protect the dog owners whose dogs are under control, so that the law does not require the dogs and owners to be attached by a leash, but to simply require the dogs to be under control of the owner.  Almost all of the hundreds of dog owners with which I and others have spoken agree with this, as do most citizens who are not dog owners.  The purpose of the law is to have our dogs under control so that are not causing a problems for others.  Let's speak to all of our elected officials and elect only those who allow us to use the dozens of areas throughout the city.  Always carry a bag to pick up after your animal and assists the city in picking up litter when you are out with your dog.  We love Broomfield and want to keep it nice and safe for everyone.

We want the dog owners of broomfield to know that the  canididates listed below seem to be supportive of keeping dogs under control without putting owners at risk of $500 citations if their dogs are under their control and not causing a problem.  Any other candidates who would like to be added to this list may call Rod deJel at 801-372-2360 to be added to this list.
